About the Artist
Grace Hills' work is often driven by material, focusing on different textures, forms, and values. Hill’s most recent work has been shaped by working to understand emotions and doing so by using a medium and process that is drawing like but creating volume and form. Traditionally a ceramic-focused artist, Hill incorporates wire into her body of work because of the versatility and flexibility it lends. Hill relies on texture to bring seduction to her work, making the audience want to look closer and understand the work deeper. Using a material such as wire has brought a non-permanent aspect to her body of work, helping relieve the pressure of a piece having to live in a permanent state.
About the Work
Untitled is an ode to the anxiety of moving from the isolation of being online to transitioning back to being in person. The wire sculpture explores the relationship between the artist’s body and the space that it takes up. The piece addresses issues of occupying space through the use of drawing with wire, creating volume with minimal lines. The sharp wire brings a rigid aspect to the sculpture, challenging notions of the body’s soft delicate outside, presenting a harsh exterior. The rust is a nod to weathering and the physical effects that isolation can have on one.
