About the Artist
I create work to tell a story in a way that is approachable, eye-catching, and promotes a dialog and connection among people of different backgrounds. Each work has a holistic theme as well deeper levels of storytelling told through details to discover. How people discover these moments, depends entirely on their own perspectives and experiences. Excited by fantasy, sci-fi, and martial arts films since early childhood, I enjoy exploring futuristic, other-worldly, and powerful visuals. I seek to create something new amidst the intersections of mixed media, experiences, and cultures.
About the Work
“Hybrid Vigor” is a mixed media installation embracing the levels, variations, and fluidity of self, stemming from the artist's own journey navigating her reality as a multiracial woman. Acting as a self-portrait, the work displays seven hand-sculpted characters who are extensions of the elements that have guided the artist in molding her identity. The experience of moving through the installation reflects the process of getting to know an individual, from the initially limited exterior view point to the intimate moments of discovery once immersed inside.
Integrating found household and childhood objects engages a playful perspective of the mundane. When playing, children create spaces for imagination that make it possible to comfortably explore their identities in an open way, free from current polarizing and binary identification. This installation is an attempt to recreate that childlike space of shifted perspectives and endless possibilities in a way that expands beyond an individual's lens. Through challenging the notion of individual identity, this installation pushes a collective experience that results in a shared connection.
